How to Practice Voicing — The Pianistic Skill Almost Nobody Teaches Well

"Bring out the melody" is the most-given and least-useful piece of piano advice. Voicing is a real skill with a real mechanism — finger-weight differentiation, ear training, and chord-level exercises — and once you have it, the difference is immediate.

Every adult learner remembers the lesson moment. The teacher says, "Bring out the melody." You play the chord again. The teacher says, "Yes, but bring out the melody more." You play it a third time, slightly louder overall. The teacher sighs, plays it themselves, and the top note of the chord arrives clearly above everything else. You hear the difference and have absolutely no idea what they did with their hand that you did not do with yours.

This is the universal experience of being introduced to voicing badly. The instruction "bring out the melody" is not wrong — it is just radically incomplete. It describes the goal, not the mechanism, and most students never receive the mechanism. They leave the lesson, play the same chord at home, can't reproduce what the teacher did, and quietly conclude that voicing must be something they will eventually "get." Years pass. The voicing rarely improves, because nothing has been deliberately practised. This article is about what should have been taught in that lesson, and how to practise it now.

What voicing actually is — and isn't

Voicing is the production of different dynamic levels for different notes played by the same hand at the same time. When you play a four-note chord with the right hand, voicing means that the top note sounds at one volume, the bottom note at a different volume, and the inner notes at yet another. From the outside it sounds like one balanced chord with one note projecting clearly; from the inside it requires the hand to do something most pianists never deliberately train it to do.

It is not the same as accenting a melody. An accent is a temporal event — one note made louder than its neighbours in time. Voicing is a textural event — one note made louder than its neighbours in space, played simultaneously with them. It is also not the same as overall dynamic shaping. A pianist can crescendo through a phrase and still have unvoiced chords inside that phrase, with the melody buried in the texture even as the whole grows louder. Voicing operates at a different level from phrasing.

This distinction matters because the standard advice usually conflates all three. "Play with more expression" can mean phrase shaping, accenting, or voicing — and the corrections each requires are different. The mechanism — finger-weight differentiation

The physical mechanism of voicing is differential finger weight. When all the fingers of one hand strike a chord at the same instant, the fingers do not all carry the same energy. The finger producing the loudest note carries more weight; the fingers producing the quieter notes carry less. This is not a matter of "pressing harder" with one finger and "pressing softer" with others — pressure after the key is depressed does nothing to the sound. It is a matter of velocity of key depression, which is determined by the weight and acceleration the finger brings to the key in the millisecond before the strike.

The trick is that the hand can deliver different velocities to different fingers in the same gesture. The arm and wrist tilt subtly toward the side carrying the loud note; the finger on that side strikes faster, with more weight behind it; the other fingers strike slower, with less weight, all in the same instant. The chord sounds together; the volumes differ. The same four-note chord, played four different ways. The fourth — equal weight on every finger — is what most pianists do by default. The first three are voicing.

The ear comes before the hand

Before the hand can voice a chord, the ear has to hear the difference between a voiced and an unvoiced chord. Most adult learners do not. Their ears are calibrated for whether notes are right or wrong — pitch and rhythm — and have never been deliberately tuned to dynamic balance within a single chord. A flat, unvoiced chord and a beautifully voiced chord sound, to an untrained ear, like the same chord at the same volume. Until that perception changes, no amount of hand practice will produce voicing, because the hand has no feedback signal to adjust toward.

The first exercise, then, is ear training. Sit at the piano. Play any four-note chord. Play it again with the top note as loud as you can make it relative to the others. Play it a third time with the bass as loud. Listen to the differences. Most students, in the first session of this kind of focused listening, are surprised at how much they had not been hearing. Once the ear can distinguish, the hand has somewhere to aim.

An adjacent exercise: listen to recordings of great pianists playing the same piece you are working on, with attention specifically on voicing. Pick a single chord-heavy phrase and listen to the same phrase played by two or three different pianists. You will hear different voicing choices — the same notes, different prominence given to different lines. Exercise 1 — Chord-by-chord voicing

The first hand exercise is to play a single chord many times in a row, each time changing which note is voiced. Pick a C major chord in the right hand — C-E-G-C. Play it five times, with each repetition voicing a different note as loud: bottom C loud, then E loud, then G loud, then top C loud, then all-equal as a control. Listen after each one. Adjust the next attempt based on what you heard.

The key sensation is not "pressing harder with one finger." It is letting the arm and wrist tilt slightly toward the side carrying the loud note, with the rest of the hand staying relaxed. If you find yourself contracting the muscles in your forearm to "force" a note out, you are doing it wrong — the result will be a harsh, percussive note rather than a projecting one. Voicing is a redirection of weight, not an addition of force.

Run this exercise for ten minutes a day for a week, using different chords. The hand learns to differentiate. By the end of the week, you can deliberately voice any note in a four-note chord without thinking about it, which is the foundation everything else builds on.

Exercise 2 — Played loud, sub-voices ghosted

The second exercise pushes the differentiation further. Pick a chord and play it with the top note at fortissimo and the inner notes as close to silent as you can make them while still depressing the keys. The technical name for this in some traditions is ghost touch — the inner-voice keys go down, the dampers lift, but the strings are barely struck.

This exercise produces an exaggerated, almost cartoonish voicing — the top note shouts, the inner notes whisper. It is not how you will actually voice in performance. But practising the extreme version trains the muscular differentiation more dramatically than practising the moderate version, and once you can produce the extreme, the moderate becomes effortless. After a week of this work, return to the chord-by-chord exercise and you will find your default voicing has more contrast than it did before.

Exercise 3 — Voicing the inner line

The third exercise is where voicing becomes the skill that separates intermediate from advanced playing. In many pieces — Bach inventions, Chopin nocturnes, Brahms intermezzi — the melody is not in the top voice. It is in an inner line, often in the alto or tenor of the texture, with notes above and below it that should sound quieter than it does. Voicing an inner line is dramatically harder than voicing the top, because the brain's default expectation is that the highest note carries the melody.

Practise this by isolating an inner-line passage and playing it five times, voicing only the inner-line note prominently while the surrounding notes recede. Some pianists find it helpful to sing the inner line aloud while playing, which directs attention toward it; others use a physical lean of the hand toward whichever finger carries the line; others practise the inner line alone first, hand by hand, before integrating. Whatever method, the result should be that a listener hearing the passage can identify the melodic line — not just say "there are some notes happening."

Exercise 4 — Two-handed balance

The fourth exercise moves up a level. So far the work has been within one hand. The next layer is balance between the hands — typically, the right hand carrying melody at one dynamic level and the left hand carrying accompaniment at a meaningfully quieter level. Most adult learners play both hands at the same dynamic by default, which produces the "everything is mezzo-forte, even where the melody should project" sound that ruins so many recordings.

The exercise is direct. Pick a two-hand passage. Play the right hand at the dynamic the melody actually needs (often mezzo-piano in slower music, sometimes piano) and play the left hand at one full dynamic level quieter (pianissimo against the right's piano). It will feel exaggerated. The recording will tell you it is correct, or close to correct, while at the bench it felt extreme. The voicing checklist by passage type

Different musical textures call for different voicing decisions. The table below covers the most common cases adult learners encounter.

Why this is the skill that separates intermediate from advanced

The reason voicing has such an outsized impact on perceived skill level is that it operates on the listener's perception of meaning. A flat, unvoiced texture sounds like a series of correct notes; a voiced texture sounds like music. The notes are the same. The information content for the listener is completely different. An intermediate pianist who learns to voice consistently sounds advanced even when their technical command is still developing. An advanced pianist who never voiced consistently sounds intermediate even when their notes are clean.

This is also why teachers prioritise voicing in late-intermediate students even when there are other technical issues to address. Voicing rewards practice disproportionately — a week of focused work produces audible change — and it scales into every piece you play afterward. A two-week practice protocol

The protocol below has worked reliably for intermediate students who already have basic chord technique and want to install voicing as a stable skill rather than an occasional success.

Days 1–3: Ear training only. Listen to recordings of pieces you know, paying explicit attention to voicing. Compare two pianists playing the same phrase. Identify which notes are projected and which recede. Do this for fifteen minutes a day without touching the piano.

Days 4–6: Chord-by-chord voicing in isolation. Use Exercise 1 for ten minutes a day, with different chords across the week. End each session by recording a single chord voiced four different ways and listening back. The recording is where you confirm whether the differentiation you felt actually arrived in the sound.

Days 7–9: Inner-line voicing in isolation. Take a Bach two-voice invention or a small passage from a Chopin nocturne with a clear inner line. Practise voicing the inner line specifically, with the singing-along technique if it helps. Record and check.

Days 10–14: Apply to current repertoire. Take any piece you are currently working on and add voicing as a deliberate practice target across the whole piece. Record passages. Compare to the recordings from the start of the protocol. The change should be audible.

Common mistakes

A few specific patterns produce the appearance of voicing without the substance, and they are worth naming. The first is volume substitution — making the entire chord louder instead of differentiating within the chord. This often happens when a student tries to "bring out the melody" by playing the whole chord forte. The melody is no more prominent than it was; everything is just louder. The fix is the chord-by-chord exercise, with explicit attention to differentiating within the chord.

The second is accent substitution — accenting the melody note in time rather than projecting it in dynamic. The melody note arrives slightly earlier than the surrounding notes, or slightly later. This is not voicing; it is a temporal cue, and listeners hear it as a strange unevenness rather than as a clear melodic line. The fix is to ensure the chord is rhythmically aligned, with the differentiation purely in dynamic.

The third is tension substitution — producing a louder melody note by tensing the forearm and pressing harder. The note is louder, but the sound is harsh and the rest of the hand becomes locked. The fix is the redirection-of-weight gesture rather than the contraction-of-muscle one — the arm tilts; the finger does not push.

What changes when this skill is real

Pianists who have done two to four weeks of focused voicing work report a specific change in how their playing sounds: there is suddenly a melody, where before there was a chord progression. Recordings reveal it. Teachers comment on it without prompting. Family members who could not articulate what was different remark that "it sounds nicer." This is not subjective. A voiced texture conveys melodic information that an unvoiced one does not, and the human ear is sensitive to that information in ways that bypass conscious analysis.

The deeper change is that voicing becomes a real choice the pianist makes — about which voice carries the melody, about how prominent it should be, about when to balance the texture differently. The pianist stops being a producer of correct notes and becomes a designer of textures. That is the work that separates the intermediate from the advanced — and the path there is not talent. It is two weeks of deliberate, mechanical, ear-trained, exercise-driven work on a skill that should have been introduced in lesson three but probably was not.

"Bring out the melody" is now something you can actually do.
