Tonara Alternatives for Teachers and Studios After the Shutdown

Tonara is no longer available. Its former iOS and Android listings have been removed. The root company domain is parked, although some old marketing and help pages remain online. Those pages do not restore access to the service. A studio searching for Tonara alternatives in 2026 is rebuilding a workflow rather than comparing current Tonara plans.

That distinction matters because Tonara had collected several jobs in one place: assignments with media, practice goals and time, student-teacher messaging, points and leaderboards, scheduling, and a Compare Recording exercise that measured a short performance against a teacher's reference. No current replacement publicly documents the whole package or the same automatic pitch, rhythm, tempo, and fluency comparison.

The useful question is which part of that system your students and staff actually depended on. Practice Space concentrates on assignments and student engagement. Vivid Practice and Better Practice organize home work in different ways. Practis gives teachers a detailed view of what happened between lessons. My Music Staff handles the studio office, while Muzie.Live is built around online and hybrid teaching.

Tonara has closed, so list the jobs that need a new home

Teachers who moved in 2023 had a live account to export or migrate. A contemporaneous account from teacher Leila Viss describes moving assignments and media while Tonara was winding down. That route is much less certain now. An old Practice Space importer still exists, but it requires Tonara credentials and does not promise a complete transfer of rosters, practice history, messages, rewards, or studio records.

Before opening trial accounts, write down what your studio still has and what it must restore. Include the active roster, family contacts, recurring lesson times, current repertoire, assignment templates, demonstration files, recent student recordings, and any billing records kept outside Tonara. The six paths below start from the job being replaced.

Practice Space rebuilds Tonara's teaching loop

Practice Space is the first trial to run if Tonara's appeal came from digital assignments, student motivation, and quick contact between lessons. Teachers can build reusable assignment and media libraries, attach images, PDFs, audio, video, and links, then give students goals and detailed instructions. Students log work, complete assignments, collect streaks, gems, badges, and leaderboard rewards, and can use direct or group chat.

Its newer Assignment Activity view keeps a student's audio or video recording with the assignment that produced it. That gives a teacher useful context during lesson preparation. A recording of an etude is easier to assess when it sits beside the original tempo, passage, and instruction instead of floating through a general activity feed.

The current Plus plan is $15.99 per month for one teacher, with unlimited student accounts and storage. Additional teacher seats are $6.95 per month. The Unlimited plan is $84.99 per month for unlimited teacher seats. Annual billing is shown as lower monthly equivalents, and there is a 30-day trial.

Tuition invoicing and a live online classroom sit outside Practice Space's published feature set. Automatic grading comparable to Tonara's old Compare Recording is also absent. Its legacy Tonara importer promises media and assignments, although a studio should confirm that it still works before entering credentials or planning a migration around it. The public page does not promise a complete recovery of an old Tonara account.

Vivid Practice and Better Practice organize the week differently

Vivid Practice keeps the assignment system restrained

Vivid Practice provides a teacher web portal and current iOS and Android student apps. Its library holds assignments in folders with audio, video, and PDF attachments. Teachers can send individual or group assignments, track what students practiced, and exchange direct or group messages. A spreadsheet import can populate an assignment library in bulk.

The unusual part is what happens during practice. Students can use blocked practice, four-minute interleaving, Pomodoro sessions, or a focused mode. Vivid explicitly says that it does not listen to or grade playing, and it avoids points, rewards, and leaderboards. That makes it a plausible home for teachers who liked Tonara's structure but found the game layer distracting.

One student is free. Current US plans cost $9 per month for up to 10 students, $19 for 25, and $29 for 50; a school plan supports up to 500 students for $390 per year. Each account has one teacher, so a multi-teacher school has a less developed permissions model than the studio platforms below.

Better Practice puts the cost on student accounts

Better Practice combines lesson plans, reusable assignments, practice lists, student logs, charts, journals, chat, recordings, rewards, and studio contests. Its large pre-entered assignment library can reduce setup work for a studio using common methods or exam material. Students can record and share audio or video, and parents have a view into the work.

The billing model is different from the others here. Teachers use it free, while each student account costs $4.25 per month after a 21-day trial. That can be easy to fold into tuition, but it becomes a family-level decision across a large roster. Better Practice runs in modern browsers on phones and computers, so families do not need an app-store download.

Practis puts practice evidence in front of the next lesson

Practis is our product. Its teacher workspace is built around the record students create at home: minutes per piece, session notes, deadlines, attached recordings, repertoire changes, and recent history. A prep view summarizes what received attention, what was skipped, and where a student reported difficulty. After the lesson, a recap and a detailed assignment carry the work into the next week.

This fits a studio that values lesson preparation and continuity more than a virtual reward shop. Practis includes lesson scheduling and recurring lessons, and every invited student receives Practis Pro while connected to a teacher. Student practice history remains with the student if the teaching connection ends. The current teacher plans are $9.99 per month for up to five students, $14.99 for ten, and $39.99 for 30. Academy pricing covers unlimited students, multiple teachers, and custom onboarding.

My Music Staff and Muzie cover the wider studio

My Music Staff handles the front office

My Music Staff gives a studio scheduling, attendance, automatic invoices, online payments, revenue and expense reports, teacher permissions, and payroll tools in one browser-based service. Its Student Portal also carries lesson notes, assignments, repertoire, files, account balances, registration, and cancellation settings. Families have a single place to find both teaching information and studio business.

The practice log is more capable than a basic minutes box. Students can run a timer or enter time manually, leave notes and questions, and upload files or video for the teacher. There are no equivalent game mechanics or automatic performance comparisons. The portal still preserves a modest between-lesson record inside the wider operational system.

The current price is $16.95 per month for one teacher or staff account and $4.95 for each additional staff member, with unlimited students and a 30-day trial. Its migration support can import student and contact data from another system. Schedules, invoices, and expenses still have to be rebuilt.

Muzie.Live suits an online or hybrid timetable

Muzie.Live begins with the lesson room. It provides music-oriented audio and video, an interactive whiteboard, MIDI tools, multiple cameras, screen sharing, lesson clips, and group teaching. Pro adds persistent student accounts, a central library, scheduling, full lesson recordings, practice timers and statistics, leaderboards and awards, chat, announcements, and AI-assisted transcripts, notes, and assignments.

That combination can cover more of the teaching week for a studio that regularly works online. The $24-per-month Pro plan supports one teacher and unlimited students. Studio costs $34 per month for an administrator and one teacher, then $24 for each additional teacher; it adds shared files, oversight, analytics, and branding. The $12 Lite tier is intended for classroom links and lacks the persistent student accounts needed for a close Tonara replacement.

Studios need a clear recording and AI policy because lessons, transcripts, and student media may contain personal information. Muzie's current privacy page describes storage and third-party AI processing in detail, so that review belongs in onboarding rather than after families have begun uploading recordings.

Tonara alternatives compared

This table uses standard US prices published on August 30, 2026. Regional prices and school agreements can differ. The final column identifies the first gap to test rather than every missing feature.

A growing school may use two systems. My Music Staff can own registration, invoices, attendance, and parent accounts while a practice-focused tool handles daily work. Before adding subscriptions, map the division of responsibility using our private-studio software stack. Duplicate rosters and messages create more work very quickly.

Rebuild the migration in a controlled pilot

Tonara data that was not exported before shutdown may no longer be recoverable. The 2023 transition account linked earlier also records two practical problems: some labels did not survive the move, and Tonara WAV files needed conversion before they could be uploaded elsewhere. Those details are a reminder to separate irreplaceable teaching material from platform-specific history.

Use a small pilot across two lesson cycles. Include an adult student, a child whose parent manages the account, a reliable practicer, and someone who often needs reminders. Give them the same kind of assignment they would normally receive, ask for one recording, send one correction between lessons, and prepare the next lesson from the resulting record.

The pilot should expose the real compromise. A teacher may miss Tonara's rewards but gain much clearer recordings. A studio may gain invoices and attendance while keeping practice feedback in a second service. There is no need to recreate every old Tonara feature at once. Restore the current assignments and teaching files first, make one complete lesson-to-practice-to-lesson loop work, then move the rest of the roster with written onboarding and an export plan.
