About the piece
Twelve studies for the left hand, addressing the weaker hand's chronic disadvantage: in most piano writing it accompanies while the right hand sings, and it rarely develops comparable agility.
A substantial literature for the left hand grew up in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, some of it written for pianists who had lost the use of the right. Moszkowski's set was written for development rather than necessity, and remains among the more musically rewarding examples.

Moritz Moszkowski
1854–1925
Moritz Moszkowski was a German-Polish composer, pianist, and teacher. His brother Alexander Moszkowski was a famous writer and satirist in Berlin.
