About the piece
Twelve studies covering all the major keys, published in 1848 as the companion to the later and even more formidable Op. 39 set in the minor keys.
The collection includes a piece depicting a fire in a neighbouring village, complete with alarm bells and the eventual return of calm, an example of the vivid and slightly unhinged pictorialism that runs through Alkan's music and sets it apart from anything else written at the time.

Charles-Valentin Alkan
1813–1888
Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French composer and virtuoso pianist. At the height of his fame in the 1830s and 1840s he was, alongside his friends and colleagues Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, among the leading pianists in Paris, a city in which he spent virtually his entire life.
