About the piece
A set of sixteen short waltzes composed in 1865, originally for piano duet and later arranged by Brahms himself for solo piano. He wrote them partly as a tribute to the Viennese waltz tradition of Schubert, whom he deeply admired, at a time when Brahms was settling into life in Vienna.
The best known of the set, No. 15 in A-flat major, has taken on a life of its own outside the complete cycle, but the full set moves through a wide range of moods across its brief numbers.

Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. His music features expressive counterpoint, freer dissonance, rhythmic vitality, and traditional forms. His works include four symphonies, four concertos, a Requiem, much chamber music, and hundreds of folk-song arrangements and Lieder.
