About the piece
Three concert studies by Leopold Godowsky, whom his contemporaries called the pianist of pianists, a phrase meaning that other virtuosos went to hear him even when the general public did not.
He was largely self-taught and possessed a technique of legendary refinement, particularly in the left hand. His fifty three studies on Chopin's etudes, which recompose them into far harder pieces and include twenty two for the left hand alone, remain among the most difficult music ever written for the instrument.

Leopold Godowsky

Leopold Mordkhelovich Godowsky Sr. was a virtuoso pianist, composer and teacher, born in what is now Lithuania to Jewish parents, who became an American citizen in 1891. He was one of the most highly regarded performers of his time, known for his theories concerning the application of relaxed weight and economy of motion within pianistic technique – principles later propagated by his pupils, such as Heinrich Neuhaus.
