About the piece
Thirty studies of mechanism, the volume most teachers reach for once a student has outgrown the beginner exercises of Op. 599 and before the demands of The School of Velocity.
Czerny's studies are often criticized as dry, and much of that criticism is fair, but their systematic coverage of the mechanical problems a pianist faces has never quite been replaced, which is why they remain in use nearly two centuries on.
The composer
Carl Czerny
1791–1857
Carl Czerny was an Austrian composer, music educator, and pianist of Czech origin. His music spanned the late Classical and early Romantic eras. His vast musical production amounted to over a thousand works and his books of studies for the piano are still widely used in piano teaching. He was one of Ludwig van Beethoven's best-known pupils and would later become one of the main teachers of Franz Liszt.
