About the piece
Thirty progressive studies by Stephen Heller, a Hungarian composer who settled in Paris and moved in the circle around Chopin, Liszt and Berlioz. Schumann admired his music and reviewed it warmly.
Heller's studies occupy an important place between mechanical exercise and concert repertoire. Unlike Czerny's drills they are genuinely musical pieces, and teachers have used them for well over a century as preparation for the Romantic repertoire proper.

Stephen Heller
1813–1888
Stephen Heller was a Hungarian pianist, teacher, and composer whose career spanned the period from Schumann to Bizet. Heller was an influence for later Romantic composers. He outlived his reputation, and was a near-forgotten figure at his death in 1888.
