About the piece
Six ecossaises, brisk country dances in duple time whose name simply means Scottish, though the form as danced in Vienna had little to do with Scotland. Beethoven wrote a number of such dances, often for social occasions rather than the concert hall.
Each is only a handful of bars long, strung together to be played as a continuous set, and they show the lighter, functional side of a composer more usually met in his sonatas and symphonies.
