About the piece
Eight nocturnes, and a useful corrective to the assumption that Czerny wrote nothing but exercises. He composed prolifically in every genre, including symphonies, masses and chamber music, almost none of it now performed.
These follow the model John Field had established and Chopin was refining, a singing melody over a widely spaced accompaniment, and they show that the man behind the drills could write a tune when he chose to.

Carl Czerny
1791–1857
Carl Czerny was an Austrian composer, music educator, and pianist of Czech origin. His music spanned the late Classical and early Romantic eras. His vast musical production amounted to over a thousand works and his books of studies for the piano are still widely used in piano teaching. He was one of Ludwig van Beethoven's best-known pupils and would later become one of the main teachers of Franz Liszt.
