About the piece

Variations on the Kamarinskaya, a Russian folk dance tune that became one of the most widely used melodies in Russian music. Glinka later built an entire orchestral work on it, a piece Tchaikovsky said contained the whole of Russian symphonic music, as an acorn contains an oak. Field spent the bulk of his life in Russia and died in Moscow in 1837, and pieces like this reflect how thoroughly he had settled into the musical life of his adopted country.
