About the piece

May, Sweet May, thirteenth in the Album for the Young, takes its title from the opening line of a German spring poem and unfolds as a warm, flowing song. It marks a step up in the collection: longer phrases, richer harmony and a sustained lyrical line that has to be shaped over a greater span than the earlier pieces demand.
