About the piece
Little Study, fourteenth in the Album for the Young, and the most overtly technical piece so far in the collection: continuous broken chords that must flow evenly and quietly from beginning to end.
Schumann left a note in his accompanying maxims that pieces of this kind should sound like music, not like exercises, and he wrote it accordingly, giving the figuration a genuine harmonic journey to travel.

He composed in all the main musical genres of the time, writing for solo piano, voice and piano, chamber groups, orchestra, choir and the opera. His works typify the spirit of the Romantic era in German music.
