About the piece

Little Folk Song, ninth in the Album for the Young. A sombre minor-key opening gives way to a brighter major-key middle section before the shadow returns. The structure is simple enough for a child to grasp whole, and it teaches something important: that a change of mode changes the entire emotional character of music without changing much else.
