Such contraptions were popular in the period and are now regarded as actively harmful. Kalkbrenner offered to take the young Chopin as a pupil for three years on arriving in Paris; Chopin was tempted, but his family and friends dissuaded him, and he later wrote that Kalkbrenner could not have taught him what he needed.
