About the piece
Beside a Spring, from the first book of Annees de pelerinage, the Swiss volume drawn from Liszt's travels with the Countess Marie d'Agoult in the mid 1830s.
Shimmering figuration high in the keyboard evokes moving water, anticipating by decades the water pieces of Ravel and Debussy. Liszt headed the score with a line from Schiller about the murmuring coolness of nature's play, and it remains among the most purely beautiful things he wrote.
