Hummel's comprehensive theoretical and practical guide to piano playing, published in 1828, one of the most important instruction books of the nineteenth century. It ran to hundreds of pages and some two thousand exercises, and the first printing reportedly sold out within days. Hummel was uniquely placed to write it. He had lived in Mozart's house as a boy and studied with him for two years, later studied with Haydn and Salieri, succeeded Haydn as Kapellmeister to the Esterhazy court, and was for a time considered Beethoven's equal as a pianist.
