About the piece
A selection from Domenico Scarlatti's sonatas, of which he wrote more than five hundred, nearly all in a single movement and nearly all during his years serving the Portuguese and then Spanish royal courts.
They are among the most inventive keyboard music ever written: hand crossings, repeated notes, acidic dissonances, and rhythms and guitar-like effects drawn from the Spanish folk music he heard around him. Born in the same year as Bach and Handel, he wrote nothing that sounds remotely like either.

Domenico Scarlatti
1685–1757
Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer. He is classified primarily as a Baroque composer chronologically, although his music was influential in the development of the Classical style. Like his famous father Alessandro Scarlatti, he composed in a variety of musical forms, although today he is known mainly for his 555 keyboard sonatas. He spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families.
