About the piece
An early piece from 1890, originally published as Ballade slave, a Slavonic ballade, before Debussy shortened the title in a later edition.
The Slavonic label reflected a fashion of the moment rather than any real folk source. Like the other short pieces of these years it was written when Debussy was little known and needed the income, some time before the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun made his name in 1894.
The composer
Claude Debussy
1862–1918
Achille Claude Debussy was a French composer, born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
