About the piece

The Ballade, fifteenth of the twenty five studies, is the most theatrical piece in the collection and probably the one students most want to play. Burgmuller marks the hushed opening misterioso. Quiet, muttering chords build tension before the music bursts into a driving, dramatic outburst and then subsides again. It teaches control of dynamic contrast, and it sounds far more difficult than it is, which is a large part of its appeal.

Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmüller, generally known as Friedrich Burgmuller was a German pianist and composer during the Romantic period. He is perhaps best known for his three collections of children's etudes for the piano, particularly his Op. 100 "25 Études faciles et progressives" for early intermediate students. The other two collections, for more advanced students, were Op. 105 and 109.
