About the piece

A cadenza for the D minor concerto, K. 466, for which Mozart left none of his own. Concerto cadenzas were originally improvised, and where the composer wrote nothing down later performers had to supply their own. This one carries unusual authority. Hummel had lived in Mozart's household as a child and studied directly with him, making his cadenzas among the closest surviving links to how Mozart's own improvisation may have sounded. Beethoven also wrote a cadenza for the same concerto.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel

1778–1837

Johann Nepomuk Hummel was an Austrian composer and pianist. His music reflects the transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era. He was among Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri’s best students. He also studied under Joseph Haydn. Hummel significantly influenced later piano music of the nineteenth century, particularly in the works of Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Felix Mendelssohn.
