About the piece
A caprice on Meyerbeer's Robert le diable, the sensation of the Paris Opera in 1831 and the work that established French grand opera as the dominant theatrical form of its day.
Its composer, Johann Peter Pixis, was one of six virtuosos, alongside Liszt, Chopin, Thalberg, Herz and Czerny, who each contributed a variation to the collaborative Hexameron in 1837.

1788–1874
Johann Peter Pixis was a German pianist and composer, born in Mannheim. He lived in Vienna from 1808 to 1824, then in Paris to 1840, during which time he was among the city's most prominent pianists and composers, although he is almost entirely forgotten nowadays.
