About the piece
The last of Litolff's five Concertos Symphoniques, works that dissolve the traditional opposition between soloist and orchestra in favour of a genuinely symphonic partnership.
Litolff's life was as eventful as his music: he eloped at seventeen, was imprisoned in Poland, escaped with the jailer's daughter, and later founded the publishing house whose cheap Collection Litolff editions did as much to spread the classical repertoire as any nineteenth century enterprise.

Henry Charles Litolff
1818–1891
Henry Charles Litolff was a French and British virtuoso pianist, composer of Romantic music, and music publisher born in London. A prolific composer, he is today known mainly for a single brief work – the scherzo from his Concerto Symphonique No. 4 in D minor – and remembered as the founder of the Collection Litolff, a highly regarded publishing imprint of classical music scores.
