About the piece
Six short pieces composed between 1844 and 1850, showing a side of Liszt far removed from the thunderous virtuoso of popular reputation. The title probably comes from a collection of poems by Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve.
The third, in D♭ major, is much the best known and is openly indebted to Chopin, whose nocturne in the same key it closely resembles in texture and mood. Liszt wrote it not long after Chopin's death, and it reads as a quiet act of homage.

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era, and his piano works continue to be widely performed and recorded.
