About the piece
A short keyboard fugue from Mozart's youth, one of several contrapuntal exercises surviving from his teenage years. Fugue writing was a required discipline rather than a fashionable form in the 1770s, and these pieces belong to his training.
Mozart returned to counterpoint with far greater intensity in the 1780s, after encountering Bach's and Handel's music at Baron van Swieten's Sunday gatherings in Vienna, an encounter that reshaped his late style.
