About the piece
Composed in Leipzig in 1789 and written into the album of a court organist, this brief gigue is one of Mozart's stranger small pieces: chromatic, angular and harmonically restless, far from the graceful dance its title implies.
He wrote it in the city where Bach had spent his last decades, and the piece reads as a knowing, slightly wry engagement with the older German keyboard tradition he had been absorbing.
