Composed in 1836, during the years when Liszt was building the touring reputation that would make him the most famous performer in Europe. This is unashamed display music, written for his own hands and calculated to astonish audiences.
Its leaps, octaves and rapid figuration are relentless, and it belongs to the same period as the first version of the Transcendental Etudes, when Liszt was pushing piano technique past anything previously attempted.
