A cycle of ten pieces completed in the early 1850s, taking its title from a collection of poems by Lamartine, and reflecting the religious preoccupation that deepened through Liszt's later life until he eventually took minor orders. It contains two of his greatest works: the Benediction de Dieu dans la solitude, serene and expansive, and Funerailles, a tolling funeral march written in 1849 and generally understood as a response to the failure of the Hungarian uprising of that year.
