About the piece

A fantasy on Home! Sweet Home!, the enormously popular song from Henry Bishop's 1823 opera Clari, which had become a byword for sentimental attachment to home across the English-speaking world. Thalberg toured the United States in the late 1850s to great success, and pieces built on tunes his audiences already knew and loved were a reliable part of the formula. Elaborating a familiar melody into a display piece was the standard virtuoso currency of the era.
