About the piece
The first of Liszt's nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s and drawing, like the rest of the set, on the verbunkos style of Hungarian Roma bands. It opens the whole cycle in a grand, ceremonial mood.
Like most of the rhapsodies, it follows the traditional two-part shape, a slow, expressive lassan giving way to a faster, more brilliant friska, though this rhapsody's proportions are broader and more symphonic than some of its shorter companions.

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era, and his piano works continue to be widely performed and recorded.
