About the piece
One of the more frequently performed of Liszt's nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s, second in popularity only to the famous No. 2. It follows the same lassan-to-friska structure as most of the set, moving from a dark, dramatic opening to a dazzling close.
Its combination of memorable themes and manageable, if still demanding, technical writing has kept it a favorite on concert programs since Liszt's own lifetime.
