About the piece
One of the less frequently performed numbers among Liszt's nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s. It follows the series' characteristic two-part form, moving from a slow, expressive lassan into a faster, more brilliant friska.
Though it has never achieved the fame of the second or sixth rhapsodies, it carries the same verbunkos-inspired character that runs through the whole set.
