About the piece
One of the shortest and least flamboyant of Liszt's nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s. Where many of its companions build toward blazing virtuoso climaxes, this rhapsody stays comparatively restrained throughout.
It draws, like the rest of the set, on the verbunkos style associated with Hungarian Roma bands, but its more modest scale has kept it in the shadow of showier numbers such as the famous second rhapsody.

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era, and his piano works continue to be widely performed and recorded.
