About the piece
Subtitled Le carnaval de Pesth, Carnival of Pest, this is one of the longer and more elaborate of Liszt's nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s. It paints a festive scene in the twin cities, Buda and Pest, that would later merge into Budapest.
Its episodic structure moves through a wider range of moods than the shorter rhapsodies, from stately processions to bursts of dance-like brilliance.

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era, and his piano works continue to be widely performed and recorded.
