About the piece
The second impromptu, composed in 1839, is the most freely wandering of the set, closer in spirit to a fantasy than a salon miniature. It moves through a sequence of changing scenes, from a quiet hymn-like opening to march-like music and then brilliantly decorated writing.
That willingness to keep transforming, rather than simply returning to the start, sets it apart from its companions.
