About the piece
Traumerei, meaning Dreaming, is the seventh of the thirteen pieces in Schumann's Kinderszenen, composed in 1838, and by far the most famous. Its melody is simple enough to hum after a single hearing, built from a single rising phrase that keeps returning in gently varied harmony.
That simplicity is deceptive. Held notes, subtle rubato and a singing legato line are all that a pianist has to work with, which is exactly what makes the piece so difficult to play truly well. It has become one of the most recorded short works in the piano repertoire.

Robert Schumann was a German composer, pianist, and music critic of the early Romantic era. He composed in all the main musical genres of the time, writing for solo piano, voice and piano, chamber groups, orchestra, choir and the opera. His works typify the spirit of the Romantic era in German music.
