About the piece
Von fremden Landern und Menschen, Of Foreign Lands and Peoples, opens Schumann's Kinderszenen, composed in 1838. Its gentle, questioning melody, poised between wonder and hesitation, sets the tone for the whole cycle of childhood remembrances that follows.
It remains one of the most recognizable openings in the piano literature, often taught to students as an early introduction to Schumann's style.
