About the piece
Wichtige Begebenheit, An Important Event, is the sixth piece in Schumann's Kinderszenen, composed in 1838. Its dotted, march-like rhythms give it a mock-serious, self-important air, as though some small childhood drama is being reported with grand ceremony.
That gentle irony, treating a child's minor event as if it were history in the making, is typical of the affectionate humor running through the whole set.
