About the piece

The Dream, a character piece in the reverie tradition that ran through nineteenth century salon music, where a title suggesting sleep, memory or longing set the mood for a flowing lyrical melody. Rubinstein wrote such pieces throughout his career. They sold, they suited the drawing rooms in which most music was heard, and they made him a household name in a way his operas never did.
