About the piece
The third and by far most famous of Liszt's three Liebestraume, or Dreams of Love, arranged for solo piano in 1850. It began as a song, O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst, setting a poem by Ferdinand Freiligrath about love that endures, and that vocal melody is at its heart.
The tune is passed between the hands over a bed of rippling arpeggios, rising through two great climaxes joined by sweeping cadenza-like runs before sinking back to a quiet close. It remains one of the most beloved pieces Liszt wrote.
