About the piece
An early nocturne from 1892, and something of an outlier: Debussy wrote almost nothing else under that title, and the genre belonged so completely to Chopin that later composers approached it warily.
Debussy revered Chopin, later editing his works for a French publisher during the First World War and dedicating his own Etudes to his memory, and this early piece shows that debt more openly than anything in his mature output.
The composer
Claude Debussy
1862–1918
Achille Claude Debussy was a French composer, born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
