About the piece
Published in 1837, this pair of nocturnes shows Chopin at his most assured. The two pieces are deliberately opposed, the first dark and turbulent in C♯ minor, the second luminous and flowing in D♭ major.
The D♭ major nocturne is among his most beloved, built on a melody that repeatedly divides into two intertwining voices, a texture drawn from the operatic duets Chopin admired in Bellini.
