About the piece
Completed in December 1785, and the first of Mozart's concertos to use clarinets in place of oboes, giving the whole work a notably warmer and darker orchestral colour.
At the premiere the audience demanded that the C minor slow movement be repeated immediately, an unusual honour that Mozart's father Leopold reported proudly in a letter. Encoring a movement mid-performance was a genuine measure of success in the Vienna of the period.

He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
