About the piece
The opening movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 7 in C major, composed in Mannheim in 1777 during the long journey he took with his mother in search of employment.
Mozart wrote to his father that the sonata's slow movement was a musical portrait of Rosa Cannabich, the young daughter of the Mannheim orchestra's director, and that it resembled her in character. The first movement heard here shares the bold dynamic contrasts he had just encountered in the famous Mannheim orchestra.
