About the piece
Composed in Munich around 1774 or 1775, when Mozart was still a teenager, this sonata opens the numbered cycle of piano sonatas that would occupy him for the rest of his life. It was the first of a set of six sonatas written on the same trip.
Its clear textures and balanced phrasing already show the poise that would define his mature keyboard writing, even if the emotional range is narrower than the sonatas to come.

He completed more than 800 works in his life—including outstanding examples of most of the genres of his time: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, opera, and choral music—and is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
