About the piece
Composed around 1783, likely during Mozart's visit to Salzburg, this sonata covers unusually wide emotional ground for its time, moving between lyrical warmth and sudden dramatic outbursts within single movements.
Its slow movement, richly ornamented in a style close to Mozart's opera arias, and its brilliant closing Allegro assai have made it one of his most frequently performed sonatas.
