About the piece
An early four-movement sonata, with a minuet and trio placed second and a slow movement third, a sequence closer to the divertimento and partita traditions than to the later classical sonata.
Haydn wrote dozens of such works in his early years, many now lost, and the survivors offer a clear view of the conventions he inherited before he began to remake them.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
