About the piece
The companion to Op. 49 No. 1, written in the mid 1790s and published in 1805 without Beethoven's approval, by his brother Kaspar. It is among the most frequently taught of all his sonatas.
Its second movement carries a melody Beethoven liked enough to reuse in the Septet, Op. 20, one of the most popular works of his early career, so students often find themselves playing a tune that Vienna was humming in the concert halls.
