About the piece
Composed in 1767, this is one of the finest of Haydn's earlier keyboard sonatas, written while he was in his mid thirties and firmly established in the Esterhazy household.
It still belongs to the harpsichord world in its textures, but the music has an expressive reach and a rhythmic vitality that point clearly toward the sonatas of the following decade.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
