About the piece
Composed around the early 1770s, this compact two-movement sonata in G minor belongs to the same searching period as the great C minor sonata.
Its opening moderato is unusually inward and sustained, closer to a slow movement in feeling than to a conventional first movement, and it shows Haydn testing how much expressive weight a keyboard sonata could carry.

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was pivotal in the evolution of chamber music forms like the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony", "Father of the String quartet" and "Father of Sonata form".
